Subject split
Biology carries half the paper
The paper uses four-option, single-correct or best-option multiple-choice questions. Biology combines Botany and Zoology and carries 360 of the 720 available marks.

Marking scheme
A wrong answer costs five marks versus a correct answer
You gain 4 for a correct answer and lose 1 for an incorrect one. Compared with getting that same question right, a wrong answer leaves you five marks behind. A blank answer scores 0, so the useful decision is not “attempt everything.” Attempt when you can narrow the options with a reason.

A practice baseline
Start with a 75–45–50–10 timing plan
NTA does not prescribe a subject order. This is a starting split for practice, not an official rule. After each full paper, move time toward the section where extra minutes produce marks without creating rushed errors elsewhere.
01
First 75 minutes
Build the Biology base
Move steadily through 90 questions. Flag long statement questions instead of letting one item stall the paper.
02
Next 45 minutes
Work Chemistry
Take direct recall and short calculations first. Keep enough space for a second look at reaction or numerical traps.
03
Next 50 minutes
Solve Physics
Prioritise clean setups. If the first route is unclear, mark the question and protect the rest of the section.
04
Final 10 minutes
Audit, do not restart
Check unanswered items and marked questions. Change an answer only when you can name the mistake in the first choice.
What changes next
Use the 2026 pattern until NTA publishes the 2027 bulletin
The 2026 exam was officially pen-and-paper based. On 15 May 2026, India's government broadcaster reported the Education Minister's announcement that NEET UG would move to computer-based testing from 2027. NTA has not yet published the detailed 2027 information bulletin. Do not assume the question count, duration, marking or shift rules will stay the same.
Quick answers
NEET pattern questions students ask most
Does NEET have 180 or 200 questions?
The NEET UG 2026 information bulletin specifies 180 compulsory questions. The earlier 200-question pattern with optional Section B is not the current official pattern.
What is the subject-wise NEET question pattern?
Physics has 45 questions, Chemistry has 45 questions, and Biology has 90 questions. The paper totals 180 questions and 720 marks.
Is there negative marking in NEET?
Yes. A correct answer earns 4 marks, an incorrect answer loses 1 mark, and an unanswered question receives 0 marks.
How long is the NEET exam?
The NEET UG 2026 information bulletin gives candidates 180 minutes, or 3 hours, for 180 compulsory questions.
