How JEE Main Percentile is Calculated
JEE Main uses a percentile score (not percentage) based on the relative performance of all candidates. Your percentile indicates the percentage of candidates who scored less than or equal to your raw score. The National Testing Agency (NTA) official JEE Main portal normalizes scores across multiple sessions using equipercentile scaling to account for varying difficulty levels.
The formula: Percentile = (Number of candidates with score ≤ your score / Total candidates) × 100

What Score Do You Need for Top Colleges?
IITs via JEE Advanced (99.5+ Percentile)
To qualify for JEE Advanced, you need to be in the top 2.5 lakh rankers. For IIT Bombay CSE, you typically need 99.9+ percentile (270+ marks). To get into any IIT, 97+ percentile is generally sufficient for most branches.
Top NITs CSE (98+ Percentile)
NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal CSE typically require 98-99+ percentile (~200-240 marks). Other top NIT branches require 95-98 percentile (~165-200 marks).
IIITs & DTU/NSUT (95+ Percentile)
IIIT Hyderabad CSE requires 99+ percentile. DTU Delhi and NSUT Delhi CSE typically require 97-99 percentile. Other IIITs accept 90-95 percentile.
GFTIs & State Colleges (80+ Percentile)
Government-funded technical institutes (GFTIs) and state engineering colleges accept scores from 80-95 percentile depending on the college and branch.

How Percentile Varies by Session
JEE Main is conducted across multiple days and shifts. Since different sessions have varying difficulty levels, the NTA uses normalization to ensure fairness. This means:
- A higher raw score in a difficult shift may result in a higher percentile than the same raw score in an easier shift
- The January session tends to have more prepared candidates, potentially affecting percentile distribution
- Your final percentile is calculated based on all sessions combined, not just your session
